Highfield Summer Fayre

The weather stayed warm and dry as the Highfield Summer Fayre was officially opened by Cllr Marie Morgan on Saturday, 14th June.

Well done to volunteers and stall holders who made the day a great success and to the Vicar, Bob Pearson for opening the vicarage grounds to the community.

It was fantastic to see so many people in attendance and raise funds in the process.

National Volunteers Week

A celebration event thanked the hundreds of volunteers who work with leisure and culture provider WLCT to make a difference in their communities.

The event at Wigan Library, which marked the end of National Volunteer Week, recognised the efforts of more than 660 volunteers who give over 30,000 hours of their free time every year.

Cllr Paul Kenny attended the event to speak to attendees. Paul said, “Volunteering brings huge benefits to those who volunteer – from learning new skills to making new friends - as well as making a real difference in our local communities. I would ask people to think about how they can become more active in their community, give something back, and support the Wigan Deal.”

If you’d like to find out more about volunteering visit the WLCT website.

Investigation Works to commence at Anthorn Rd

Your Labour Team have been notified that Wigan & Leigh Housing (WALH) have appointed consultants to commence ground investigation works on the site of the former Anthorn Rd Community Centre which will include bore holes and trial pits.

Work is expected to start on site this week with the intrusive works likely to last no more than a week with ongoing occasional monitoring for some months.

The site is still under the ownership of Wigan Council and we understand that WALH have not yet decided whether or not to acquire the site. We will off course keep residents appraised of any future developments.

Cllr Paul Kenny has confirmed that the site is one of several across the Borough that are being looked at by WALH to assist in the delivery of affordable housing. Your Labour Team will ensure that any future proposals will be subject to appropriate consultation with local residents.
