Winstanley Shopping Centre set for facelift

A focal point in community life is set for a major refurbishment if plans submitted to Wigan Council (Planning Reference A/13/78676 refers) are approved.

Winstanley Shopping Centre is owned by The Hollins Murray Group Ltd and they propose to refurbish the existing retail units and external areas and create additional floorspace for retail use. In addition car parking spaces will be clearly defined around the site and the current elevations of the buildings will be maintained.

Many residents will recall the opposition of the then Mayor and Ward councillor, Rona Winkworth in 2008 to a scheme proposed by the previous owners that would have seen 30 flats constructed above the existing shops. Due to the economic downturn the scheme was never realised.

We welcome the proposal as it will breathe new life into the Centre. It will be good for the local economy and will improve the local environs as well as creating new opportunities for small businesses. It is great to see that the site owners wish to invest in our area despite the current economic difficulties that face business as we emerge from the recession.
